Half Marathon Pace Charts

Would you like to know how fast you could run a half marathon?

I'm quite often asked by runners how fast I think they could complete a half marathon. It's quite normal for people to consider the best performance that they're capable of.

It's also quite normal to wonder how well you might perform at other race distances based on your average running pace in training. Though there's more to predicting race performance than your average pace for a leisurely trot around the block.

Target race time

If however, you'd like to achieve a specific target half marathon finish time. Then the pace charts below could be quite a useful tool to get an idea of the average pace and speed you'd need to maintain for the entire 13.1094 miles or 21.10975 km.

The charts below provide finishing times in 5-minute increments from 1 hours and 05 minutes all the way up to 5 hours. Alongside each finishing time is the pace per mile and the average speed that equates to.

There are three charts one in miles, one in km and finally one with both units.

For context, the first two entries are the current world records for:

Just in case you have a hankering to try and beat the fastest half marathon performances of all time!

If you want to check out marathon race paces, I've created separate charts for that distance which you can see by clicking here.

UPDATE: Since publishing my pace chart articles I've created several calculators. So, if you can't find the exact time in these charts head over to Running Calculators page and check out the race finish time or pace and speed calculators.

Video of the Men's Half Marathon World Record

The video below gives some good commentary on the 2021 Lisbon Half Marathon race. It also spells out what a great race Kiplimo had to end up crossing the line in 57:31 at the age of just 21!

It's also worth remembering that Kiplimo took second place at Valencia Half Marathon in 20202 (the race where the previous world record was set), just 5 second behind the winner Kandie Kibiwott, who won with a time of 57:32.

It would seem that Kiplimo has plenty more left to come...

Video of the Women's Half Marathon World Record

The video below includes highlights of the 2021 Valencia Half Marathon race. It also does a good job of explaining just how impressive Letesenbet's debut at the half marathon distance was. Yes - I said debut, she basically smashed the world record to bits at her first race of the half marathon distance - phenomenal!

FYI: In due course I will add more information here about how to predict race performance based on training paces or other race distance results.

I may even share my own excel spreadsheet with built in calculator.
